Dry Film Lubricant and Fluoropolymer Coatings
Dry film lubricant fluoropolymer coatings are everywhere in day to day life. When you fly on a commercial plane, apply the brakes in your car, switch on an air conditioner, or watch your favorite driver win a race, it is likely that dry film lubricant fluoropolymer coatings are improving how those machines work. Coated with fluoropolymer materials, small bearings on jet engines, brake actuators, pistons and bearings run smoother, longer and safer.
These low friction materials combine the capabilities of two high-performance engineering plastics to achieve a coefficient of friction lower than any known solid. Dry lubricants go back to ancient mechanics using graphite, talc and other slick powders to reduce sliding friction. Modern lubricant coatings added a second major benefit on top of that: outstanding corrosion resistance. Where mechanical parts have to work under those conditions, a dry film lubricant may be the only safe way to lubricate and protect, and the ability to wet a dry film lubricant with primary lubrication only adds to its durability.
The PolyDyn Coating Matrix
In 1965 a team of polymer chemists and engineers devised the matrix concept for coatings: build a coating that protects the soft fluoropolymer from wear while still taking advantage of its low friction. That is still how a PolyDyn coating is built, from three ingredients.
Solid Lubricant
Small particles of solid lubricant, for low friction and release.
Polymer Binder
An engineering polymer binder, for film strength and adhesion, and to protect the softer lubricating particles.
Pigments and Fillers
Pigments and fillers, for additional hardness, color and corrosion resistance.
These coating materials have a flexible cure schedule. Full specifications, including the temperature and pressure ranges, are on the technical data page.

The Other Side of the Shop
The same chemistry that protects a turbine blade protects a piston dome. Our performance coatings section covers the engine side of the business: pistons, bearings, headers and exhaust and the rest of the short block. Coating work is a service either way. Send us the part.
